Miriam's African Connection

Last year Miriam participated in a program called AlphaSmarts for Africa. This program allowed schools to return used or outdated AlphaSmarts to receive a rebate to use toward the purchase of new keyboards. Renaissance Learning in partnership with Generation for Change and Growth then retooled the keyboards for use in schools in Kenya, Africa.

This is a wonderful program that not only allows Miriam to enhance our academic program but provides an opportunity for Kenyan schools to gain their first experience using modern technology.

Olivia Visits Miriam

Room 4 students had an especially exciting day today when they got their first visit from Olivia of Support Dogs, Inc. Thanks to the hard work of Jackie Smith, Miriam will now be partnering with Support Dogs, an organization that "helps people with special needs achieve an improved quality of life through the use of assistance dogs."

Olivia will be visiting Room 4 every other Friday from 10:30-11:30 during her reading time. Olivia is a Newfoundland weighing 100 lbs. and is part of the PAWS for Reading Program, the newest program offered by Support Dogs, Inc. The purpose of the program is to have dogs serve as a nonthreatening incentive to promote reading, writing, and increased interaction and social skills in the classroom.

We are very excited to add Olivia to our Miriam enrollment and look forward to working with her this year! Read More!

Pinwheels for Peace

As our world becomes increasingly more interconnected the Miriam faculty are finding exciting and interesting ways to allow Miriam students an opportunity that will connect them with other students around the country and around the world.

One of these projects will take place on September 22, when the entire school will be involved in a worldwide project called Pinwheels for Peace. Each student has been creating a pinwheel which will be on display on the lawn in front of the building. We will also be having a school-wide "Peace Assembly" in the morning to celebrate International Peace Day. This assembly will include music, poetry and the placement of all of the pinwheels that the students have created.

Literacy Links To Learning

As one walks through the halls of Miriam School its not unusual to hear teachers reading chapter books aloud, children reading in small groups, volunteer parents in the library sharing delightful stories with the children as they check out books, and speech-language therapists talking about characters in books and how they communicate with one another.

This year, one might see more evidence of the wonderful world of literature and how it touches all of our minds and hearts at Miriam School. The school's Curriculum Committee has chosen the theme, "Literacy Links to Learning" for the 2008-2009 school year. The school-wide theme was chosen to increase awareness for our students of the value in reading and its connection to all of learning. Monthly themes of Peace, Leadership, Gratitude, Service, Autobiographies/Biographies, Science and Social Studies, Classical Literature, and Poetry will be addressed through literature and classroom projects.

Take a few minutes to stroll around the building to see the classroom or booth doors transformed into the jackets of some of our favorite books. Soon you will see colored links hanging in the halls, each link representing a book read, a story written, a poem penned. As the year goes on, banners will be hung in the atruim depicting some of our favorite literary characters.

Join us as we read fables and fairy tales, fiction and non-fiction. Journey with us to the past, the future, and all the adventures in between!

There's Music in the Air!

The music program for Rooms 6-9 has been restructured this year to allow the students an opportunity to participate in a class of their choosing. The students could select from the Miriam Choral Group, Choir Chimes Ensemble or Music Appreciation. Each class will continue to be taught by Dan Sproat and will meet on Monday mornings in the library. We're excited about seeing the fruits of their labor at this year's Spring Concert and Talent Show. Read More!
