Holiday Greetings From Across the Country

Rooms 2 and 6 are participating in a Holiday Card Exchange this year through Projects By Jen. The students have created holiday cards to be sent to 25 different school throughout the country. The card exchange gives the students a chance to learn about the climate and history of schools in other parts of the country. Using Google Earth, the students will actually be able to take a "tour" of the country as they connect with other students participating in the project. This project also opens up the opportunity to develop pen-pals and collaboration partners for other projects throughout the year. Keep your eye out for the displays of the card that we receive. The planning for this year's “Survivor Miriam” Summer Program is underway. While the TV show encourages players to “Outwit, Outplay and Outlast”, our goal will be to “Enlighten, Encourage, and Empower.”

The Miriam School Summer Program offers the opportunity for students to maintain academic skills through instruction in reading, math and written language in the morning. During the afternoon, the students will participate in a variety of enrichment activities based on our theme and will explore the social skills necessary for successful teamwork.

  • Session 1, "Navigators" will introduce the skills of survival. Older students may learn about how to read a map and how to survive both in the classroom and in the wild, while the younger students will learn about the many different habitats found around the world.
  • Students moving on to Session 2, "Explorers" will continue their journey of survival. Younger students will learn how animals and people "survive" in different environments. and older students will explore their own personal learning styles, and learn about the ways in which exploration has changed the world as we know it.
Weekly "tribe challenges" will focus on team building games and activities that are not about competitiveness, but rather about empowerment.

“Survivor Miriam” offers 2 two-week sessions. Students can sign up for one or both two-week sessions. Groups are determined by age, social skills and academic compatibility.

"Navigators" Session 1: June 21 - July 2 - $600
"Explorers" Session 2: July 6 - July 16 - $575 (No program July 5)

Registration for "Survivor Miriam" will begin in January.

Book Fair Success!

The Scholastic Book Fair has come and gone leaving behind many happy students, teachers and library volunteers. We met our goal of $4,000 in sales and have many new books for the library as well as a budget for the remainder of the year!

This year we opened up the fair to "Grand Persons" at our Wednesday lunch event. This was a great success and we really enjoyed having the opportunity to meet some of our student's extended family members.

Thank you for your continued support of Miriam School.

Compass Treasure Hunt

The students of Room 2 have been studying maps and how to use a compass so they decided to put their exploring skills into action yesterday on a walking field trip. Luckily for us, Ms. Judy lives a short distance away and was kind enough to leave a treat on her porch for us to find. The students donned their wearable compasses and set out to investigate what directions we needed to follow to find our treasure. We also used the high tech GPS method to ensure we found the exact location. All in all it was a fun way to learn how to use a compass!

Springfield or Bust!

Rooms 6-9 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Springfield, Illinois last Thursday to learn more about our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. The staff and students arrived bright and early for our day long trip. The classes have been studying Lincoln for the past few weeks and this was a great way to finish off!

We began our tour at New Salem where the children were able to see replicas of the general store Abe worked at as well as many other historic buildings from the time he lived there. Several of the students mentioned that they felt like they were "traveling back in time"
From there we headed to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum where the students met the Lincoln family in the lobby and watched two interactive movies about the life of the President. We saw many amazing artifacts and the students gained a much richer knowledge of President Lincoln.

The students found many ways to pass the time on the bus from reciting the "Gettysburg Address" to of course, playing video games!
